  • Question Time: Helping Sam Find Binoculars for His Son’s First Tramp

    Jun 13, 2025

Welcome to the latest entry in our “Your Questions Answered” series—where we tackle real (and commonly asked) questions from customers across New Zealand, helping you choose the right optics for your next outdoor adventure.

    Sam’s Email:

"Hi! We’re doing the Tongariro Crossing with our 10-year-old in the school holidays and he’s really into nature and birds. Is there a decent lightweight binocular that’s tough enough for kids but not just a toy?"

    — Sam from Wellington

    My Reply:

Thanks for the message, Sam—sounds like a fantastic trip for your family. It’s great to hear your son’s already interested in the outdoors.

For younger users, it’s really important to find something that’s:

    • Lightweight and easy to carry
    • Durable enough to handle the occasional knock
    • Comfortable for smaller faces and hands
    • And not just a gimmicky “kids binocular” that won’t last the walk
    • We usually recommend models with a magnification of 6x to 8x, and an objective lens of around 30–32mm, which keeps the binoculars compact without sacrificing clarity.
    • It’s also helpful if they’re waterproof, just in case the weather turns while you’re up on the crossing.

From our range I'd suggest the following options:

    The Outcome

Sam went with the Vortex Bantam HD 6.5x32 Youth Binoculars—a perfect match for his son. They’re designed specifically for younger users, with a smaller fit, lightweight build, and excellent optical clarity. The added bonus? They come with Vortex’s legendary VIP Warranty, which even covers accidental damage—ideal peace of mind when binoculars are going tramping in a 10-year-old’s backpack.

    A Final Note

At ScopeUout, we help all kinds of adventurers—from first-time birders to seasoned hunters—find gear that suits their needs. We’re a small NZ family business, and when you get in touch, you’ll always hear back from me, Jodi. It’s personal service from someone who uses this gear too.
