Thermal Scopes in NZ: What Are They, How Do You Use Them, and What’s the Difference Between the Falcon Raptor and Medusa?

Jul 25, 2025

What is a Thermal Scope and Who Uses One?

Thermal scopes detect infrared radiation (heat), making them highly effective in low light or complete darkness. They’re widely used in New Zealand for pest control, night hunting, wildlife observation, and even search and rescue. Unlike traditional night vision, thermal doesn’t rely on ambient light—it works in fog, bush, and across wide open paddocks.

What’s the Difference Between the Falcon Raptor and Medusa?

Core Specs — Almost Identical

Both scopes share the same powerful 640×512 thermal sensor, 50 mm F/1.0 lens, sub-18 mK sensitivity, integrated laser rangefinder, and ballistic calculator. They also both offer onboard photo/video recording, Wi-Fi streaming, and run on 18650 batteries or USB‑C power.

But a few important differences set them apart:

Lens Material

Raptor: Built with a premium germanium lens — excellent infrared clarity, but more expensive and restricted for export in some regions.

Medusa: Uses a sulphur chalcogenide lens — a new, affordable material that still delivers great thermal performance and isn’t export-restricted. This contributes to the Medusa’s much lower price.

Focus Control

Raptor: Top-focus dial for easier adjustment while staying on target

Medusa: Side-focus adjustment that still works well but can be slightly less convenient when aiming

Price & Value

The Medusa is around $1,000 cheaper, making it one of the best-value thermal scopes in NZ. The Raptor costs more but offers refined usability and a premium lens.

Not Just Riflescopes — Falcon Monoculars

In addition to riflescopes, Falcon also offers:

  • Handheld monoculars — great for scouting, wildlife observation, or handheld pest detection

These use the same high-resolution sensors and rugged builds as the riflescopes, making them ideal for a wide range of thermal imaging needs.

Which Falcon Thermal Device is Right for You?

If you want a compact, high-spec riflescope for precision targeting, go with the Raptor.
