Olivia’s Email:
"Hi team, I’ve got a trip to Stewart Island coming up this month and want to get serious about birdwatching. I’ll be doing a mix of walking and boat tours. What’s a good binocular that won’t weigh me down but still gives clear views of things like kaka and albatross?"
— Olivia from Christchurch
My Reply:
Thanks for the email, Olivia—Stewart Island is a dream destination for birding and sounds like a brilliant trip.
Since you’ll be doing both bush walks and boat-based tours, you’ll want a pair of binoculars that’s:
- Light enough to carry comfortably all day
- Bright and sharp in mixed light conditions (coastal and forest)
- And waterproof/fogproof, especially with the island’s famously changeable weather
An 8x42 binocular is often the best all-round option here—it gives you enough reach to spot seabirds from the boat or shore, while still offering a wide field of view for forest birding. If you’re looking for something a little more compact, an 8x32 could also work well, especially if weight is a priority.
Here are some options to consider:
The Outcome
Olivia went with a pair of 8x32 binoculars—a great lightweight choice that still offers sharp, bright views across a range of habitats. With waterproof construction and a compact design, they’re ideal for travelling light on bush walks while still giving her the clarity she needs for spotting seabirds from the boat. We got them delivered in time for her trip, and she’s likely out using them right now on Stewart Island.
