Janelle’s Email:
"Hi, I’m heading to Kaikōura in a couple of months and hoping to spot some whales. We’ll be doing a boat tour but also spending a bit of time watching from the cliffs. I’m keen to get one good pair of binoculars to cover both. What would you recommend that can handle both ocean glare and distance?"
— Janelle from Napier
My Reply:
Thanks for your message, Janelle—Kaikōura is an incredible spot for whale watching and it’s great that you’re planning ahead.
Because you’ll be combining boat-based and land-based viewing, the key is to find binoculars that offer a balance between magnification and stability. On a moving boat, higher magnification (like 10x) can be difficult to keep steady, so 7x or 8x magnification is more practical. From land, 8x still gives you plenty of reach and a good field of view.
If you’re only looking to take one pair with you, I’d recommend a quality 8x42 binocular. It’s bright, stable, and versatile enough to perform well on deck or from the cliffs. Just make sure it’s fully waterproof and fogproof, as salt spray and cool sea air can easily affect lesser-quality models.
Here are a few options for you to consider. I've listed them in quality and price order so you can decide what price range you'd like to opt for.
- Bushnell H2O 2 8x42 Roof Prism Binoculars
- Vortex Diamondback HD 8x42 Binoculars
- Athlon Argos G2 8x42 UHD Binoculars
- Nikon Monarch M7 ED 8x42 Binoculars
- Vortex Razor HD 8x42 Binoculars

The Outcome
We pointed Janelle toward a couple of solid 8x42 options with marine-rated sealing and excellent image clarity. She chose a pair that gave her the flexibility to enjoy Kaikōura’s whales from the boat and the shore—without needing two different sets of optics.
